McLanahan, Sarah and Gary Sandefur. Growing Up With a Single Parent: What Hurts, What Helps. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2006. Print.

This book describes in depth the reasons why children raised by a single parent are typically worse off than children raised in a nuclear family. The authors analyze multiple reasons with an open mind and compare family statistics of even children raised by their grandparents, or a mother and a grandmother, stepfamilies, and many more varieties. The majority of their research statistics come from the NLSY (National Longitudinal Survey of Youth), PSID (Panel Study of Income Dynamics, HSB (High School and Beyond Study), and the U.S. Census Bureau. With the collective data of these statistics, McLanahan and Sandefur explain not only the disadvantages children of single parents face, but how and why these disadvantages come to be.

Chesser, Barbara Jo. Analysis of Wedding Rituals: An Attempt to Make Weddings More Meaningful. Family Relations 29.2 (1980): 204. SocINDEX with Full Text. EBSCO. Web. 6 May 2010.

This paper presents a framework for studying and analyzing wedding symbolisms, rituals, and pageantry. Composing their own wedding vows and consciously selecting rituals with specific symbolisms in mind also fosters realistic expectations of self, the marriage partner, and the marriage relationship. It analyzes the purpose the ring, the date chosen, the kiss, the bridal veil, color of the wedding gown, the cake, and flowers and their background as well as their role in a wedding ceremony. Concludes wedding rituals are included because it is human desire to want to validate the passing from one status to another. References Included.

Schneider, Valerie. Confirmed in the Spirit. Mystic, CT: Twenty-Third Publications, 1995. 66-68. Print.

Orginally. I looked through this book and decided it was merely for one who was in the process of getting confirmed. However, while I was writing my paper it became apparent that it contained valuable information on the history of confirmation. The book talked about the Early Catholic Church as well as Protestant religions. It was published quite a while ago but the information did not need to be current to work with my paper. My newer, recent sources contained much of the same information. Overall, this book outlined the transformation of confirmation and it also addressed how one prepares for the ceremony today.

Brand, Serge, et al. “Romantic Love, Hypomania, and Sleep Pattern in Adolescents.” Journal of Adolescent Health 41 (2007): 69-76. 18 April. 2010.

One hundred seven adolescents with a mean age of 17.98 years participated in a study for which the results are written in this article. The study examines how early stage romantic love affects sleep, daytime functioning and self worth and provides useful results and expert opinions.

Davila, Johanna, et al. “Romantic involvement and depressive symptoms in early and late adolescence: The role of a preoccupied rational style.” Personal Relationships 11 (2004): 161-178. 18 April. 2010.

This article discusses symptoms of depression in young adults as a result of romantic relationships. It provides results of various useful studies conducted on adolescents and their depressive moods when in a relationship. One part of the study, for example, examined the effects of attachment on adolescents involved in romantic relationships, which included shunning other relationships such as those with family and friends.

Drysdale, Maureen and BJ Rye. Taking Sides Clashing Views in Adolescence. Iowa. 2007.

This book discusses a total of 17 controversial issues on the lives of adolescence. It provides helpful research, expert opinions, and various studies conducted on adolescents. I may use this book for my research on teenage dating and its effect on teen developmental adjustments. It also discusses ideas on romantic relationships and identity development, transformation of family relationships when a teenager dates, and the development of close relationships with peers.

Feldman, S. Shirley, Randy Mont-Reynaud, and Doreen A. Rosenthal. "When East Moves West: The Acculturation of Values of Chinese Adolescents in the U.S. and Australia." Journal of Research on Adolescence (Lawrence Erlbaum) 2.2 (1992): 147-173. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 8 May 2010.

This article is about a study done on high school youths with a Chinese background living in the U.S. and Australia. The study takes a look at the “acculturation of values” of these adolescents—in other words, how their values have changed. In the process of describing the study, the article does a really good job of analyzing the differences in values between traditional cultures (such as China) and Western cultures (such as the U.S. and Australia). It emphasizes how China stresses the importance of the group and family more than the individual (which is called collectivism) and how the U.S. and Australia stress the importance of the individual more than the group (individualism). This article may be useful for anyone researching ethnic adolescents or who want to know about cultural values.

Friedman, Natalie. "From Hybrids to Tourists: Children of Immigrants in Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake." Critique 50.1 (2008): 111-128. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 5 Apr. 2010.

This article if a critique of the original version of The Namesake – that is, the novel. It examines a number of themes in the novel, one major theme being the differences between The Namesake and older novels that focus on immigrants, such as The Rise of David Levinsky. Friedman points out that The Namesake is not about “disenfranchised” and poor immigrants, since Gogol’s family is fairly successful. The article also examines themes of Gogol as a “tourist” and “world-weary traveler,” how his “tourism” applies to his love life, and how Gogol portrayed as banal compared to his parents, who were the original immigrants. Although these themes are interesting, I am more interested in an examination of Gogol’s identity formation and parent issues as I am tentatively planning to write this paper on the effects of cross-culturalism on adolescence. The article does touch upon identity – it talks about “dual identity as it manifests itself in America and in the shrinking global community” – and the “wandering” motif that is mentioned can be used in a discussion of identity; however, it does not specifically talk about these issues.

Geerfjan, Overbeek, Thao Ha, Ron Scholte, Raymond Dr Kem, Rutger C.M.E Engels. “Intimacy, Passion and Commitment in romantic relationships-Validation of a “triangular love scale’ for adolescents”. Journal of adolescence 30 (2006): 523-528. 18 April. 2010.

This is an article I found on Psych Info, a database found on Baruch Library website. It is a study which examines the properties of an adolescent’s version of the “triangular love scale,” which includes three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. It includes important information on the views of adolescents from ages 12-18, including a statistical summary of their views on the importance of the love scale and its components. I think this source may be helpful in my research because it expresses teenagers' views on love and the components of love - views that may be different from that of an adult’s. This article also contains expert opinion from a science institute in the Netherlands. It places my topic in a social view where I can examine adolescents' views of love and thus conclude that falling in love can be a personal process of breaking away from adolescence.

Gilbert, James. A Cycle of Outrage: America's Reaction to the Juvenile Delinquent in the 1950s. Oxford University Press, USA, 1988.

James Gilbert argues in A Cycle of Outrage that the notion of the juvenile delinquent as an ever-present threat was a byproduct of American concerns about changes in both adolescence and mass media. Ultimately, by examining debates over mass culture, he concludes that the discourse on "juvenile delinquency" was distinct from the social realities that gave rise to it, and in retrospect revealed much more about American society in the 1950s than the experience of coming of age.

Gottfredson, Michael R., and Travis Hirschi. A General Theory Of Crime. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1990.

Although published a while ago, it was the first theory to really try to explain crime in more contemporary means. It sets knew standards and instead of judging adolescents tries to explain and understand them.

Inge Seiffge–Krenke, Geertjan Overbeek, Ad Vermulst. “Parent – child relationship trajectories during adolescence: Longitudinal associations with romantic outcomes in emerging adulthood.” Journal of Adolescence 33 (2010): 159-171. 18 April.

This article discusses how parent-child relationships can affect later romantic relationships in adolescence. It also analyzes the changes in the views of adolescents towards their parents as they become adults. This article presents various studies relating to the subject matter with useful statistics. This article also provides an expert analysis, opinion, and conclusion.

Jen, Gilbert. “Risking a relation: Sex education and adolescent development. “ Sex Education Vol.7, No. 1 (2007): 47-61. 18 April. 2010.

This paper discusses expert opinion on adolescence and an adolescent's effort to construct a self and find love outside of family. The search for identity in teenagers is another topic discussed. I think this paper will be useful for my research because it relates to my topic and the personal ritual of breaking away from adolescence by forming a relationship.

Ketterlinus, Robert D., and Micheal E. Lamb. Adolescent problem behaviors. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc., 1994.

This book focuses on many problems of adolescents and may lead me to focusing on one, exploring it. and finding how it relates to juvenile delinquency.

Lincoln, Bruce. THE RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE OF WOMEN'S SCARIFICATION AMONG THE TIV. Africa 45.3 (1975): 316. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO.Web. 23 Apr. 2010.

This article examines the religious significance of women's scarification on the stomach among the Tiv people in Nigeria. There is a discussion on the role of the Akombo, the sacred objects, in the scarification of Tiv women. As well this article explains the pattern of scarification on the stomach and how Tiv women are transformed into a sacred object at puberty.

McGoldrick, Monika, John Pearce, and Joseph Giordano, eds. Ethnicity & Family Therapy. New York: Guilford Press, 1982.

This book focuses on cultural differences between people from a psychological point of view. It is chock full of useful information. Some great quotations include: “Ethnicity is a powerful influence in determining identity....We may ignore it or cut if off by changing our names, rejecting our families and social backgrounds, but we do so to the detriment of our well-being” (5). Also, “[I]f people receive negative or distorted images of their ethnic background or learn values from the larger society that conflict with those of their family, often develop a sense of inferiority and self-hate that can lead to aggressive behavior and discrimination toward other groups” (5). This kind of behavior as a result of adolescents being bombarded with conflicting values is exactly what I want to take a look at in my paper. In addition, it will be useful to anyone who wants to study adolescence in terms of ethnicity.

Minze, Laura C., et al. "Making sense of family conflict: Intimate partner violence and preschoolers’ externalizing problems." Journal of Family Psychology 24.1 (2010): 5-11. PsycARTICLES. EBSCO. Web. 6 May 2010.

This article relates parental violence with external problems of preschoolers. This will help me in finding parental factors in juvenile delinquency.

Monahan, Kathryn C., Laurence Steinberg, and Elizabeth Cauffman. "Affiliation with antisocial peers, susceptibility to peer influence, and antisocial behavior during the transition to adulthood." Developmental Psychology 45.6 (2009): 1520-1530. PsycARTICLES. EBSCO. Web. 6 May 2010.

In this article the researchers try to formulate a relation between antisocial teens and the likely probability that they would be predisposed to falling to peer pressure. This will help me because it will allow me to explore different factors that make a teen turn to crime.

Vazsonyi, Alexander T., and Li Huang. "Where self-control comes from: On the development of self-control and its relationship to deviance over time." Developmental Psychology 46.1 (2010): 245-257. PsycARTICLES. EBSCO. Web. 6 May 2010.

This tests the theory of self-control proposed by Gottfredson. It will give me experimental data to back up the book A General Theory of Crime.

Wessells, Michael. "Supporting the Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-Being of Former Child Soldiers." Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry 48.6 (2009): 587-590. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 17 May 2010.

This article discusses the psychological effects of having been a child soldier. A significant percentage of these former soldiers display symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. They also show an extreme difficulty upon rejoining society, because they’re viewed as rebels, are believed to be pursued by the angry spirits of those who they killed, and lack the skills necessary to function independently within a community. Girls often return with the inability to find a husband because they bore the children of their captors, who are seen as “rebel children.” This source is extremely important because it shows some of the severe psychological traumas associated with being forced to take on responsibilities beyond one’s years, and how recovering individuals often lack the skills deemed appropriate for one’s age level.

Winder, Alvin E. Adolescence. University of Massachusetts, 1974.

This book can help me identify an adolescent's struggle for independence and use of romantic relationships to search for this independence. The struggle for independence is described in various chapters explaining family ties and their well-being in adolescence. This book includes various explanations on changing sexual values as well as family importance during adolescence. This book is relatively old so I must be cautious of possible outdated information.
